Be willing to stop writing for a short period so that you can refresh your mind with new ideas and research. Establish chunks of time to research and write. While it is important to keep writing and make the most of the time that you have, it is best for writing projects specifically to set aside large portions of time with which to write. Writing requires momentum, and momentum gathers over time. Personally, I have found that I need at least an hour to get things rolling, and that three to four hours is ideal.

Other important elements of the dissertation include the title page, abstract, and reference list. If in doubt about how your dissertation should be structured, always check your department’s guidelines and consult with your supervisor. The very first page of your document contains your dissertation’s title, your name, department, institution, degree program, and submission date. Sometimes it also includes your student number, your supervisor’s name, and the university’s logo. Many programs have strict requirements for formatting the dissertation title page. Create an Outline: creating an outline can help you organize your thoughts and ideas. It can also help you avoid getting lost in the details and losing sight of the big picture. Start by outlining the main points you want to make, then break them down into sub-points. Once you have a solid outline, you’ll have a roadmap to follow as you write. Develop Characters and Plot: creating compelling characters and plotlines is critical to engaging your readers. Spend time developing your characters’ personalities, motivations, and conflicts. Create a compelling plot that keeps your readers hooked and wanting more.
